Writing has been with me for as long as I can remember. I still have my very first pink diary with the little lock on it. Back then, I didn’t understand why putting “Dear Diary” on the page made me feel lighter but it did. Writing became my most trusted companion, a place where I could sort through my feelings and even hear my own wisdom reflected back at me.
As I grew older, I learned what research now confirms, that writing can help us process trauma, grief, and the complex emotions that come with life’s challenges.
In 2018, I began writing more intentionally about my experiences as a female police officer. Some entries poured out in frustration. Others were written through tears. And at times, I wrote about moments that made me laugh and feel joy. Writing gave me the full range of emotions, reminding me that no single day, or person, is only one thing.
Over time, I also discovered that sharing those stories mattered. As a police leader, I saw how powerful it was to speak honestly about both successes and struggles. People wanted to know they weren’t alone in their silent battles, the fears, shame, or doubts we’re often too afraid to admit. I’ve felt that same hesitation before pressing “post,” but I’ve also learned how connection begins when we dare to share.
That’s what led me to write my first book, Tightrope. It’s an expanded version of the journey I’ve been sharing publicly for years, now told more fully, freely, and openly. No longer in uniform, I can speak not only about the realities of law enforcement, but also about its ripple effects: on families, friends, communities, and on the officers themselves.
My original manuscript was over 140,000 words, and cutting it down to about 65,000 meant leaving a lot behind. This blog is where I’ll continue to share those stories, lessons, and reflections, pieces of the journey that didn’t make it into the book, but still deserve a place.
My hope is simple: that my writing brings peace to those who need it, comfort to those who feel alone, and encouragement to anyone seeking to find their own story within themselves. Because we all have one.
So welcome, I’m glad you’re here. I hope you’ll stay awhile, read, share, and maybe even see a part of your own journey reflected back to you. And if it’s not for you, that’s okay too. We each only get one shot at this life—I hope you live yours well.
